Field Sketching at McColl Pond

A small but enthusiastic group gathered at McColl Pond Environmental Learning Center (ELC) in Savage for sketching prairie grasses and blooms on a beautiful summer day, Aug. 19.  The ELC is part of the larger Savage Community Park, and just south of the famous and rare ecosystem of the Savage Fen Wetland Complex.

The McColl Pond ELC comprises 10 acres of prairie, rain gardens, mature trees, and shoreline laced with walking paths.  Lush prairie growth abounds just steps from the building, so it was easy to set up with a folding chair and sketchbook on the sheltered patio or walkways around the Center building.

The group noted that the center building’s meeting room and classrooms would make a wonderful spot for future GRC meetings and workshops.  The attractive and comfortable Center was designed with sustainability in mind, including a vegetated roof that collects and filters storm water, power from solar energy, and geothermal systems for temperature control.
