Diane is an illuminator for 
The Saint John’s Bible.
With over 30 years of graphic design and her international workshop schedule, the GRC is
fortunate to have Diane offer this day long
workshop on illumination.
Participants can expect to draw, paint and embellish letters using supplied models and are encouraged to bring in some of your own designs, such as a monogram or initial (approximately 2" x 2"). We will also learn to apply gold leaf to the designs and will receive technical direction on laying background color, diapering a letter and working with a ruling pen. Depending upon the progress, participants may have several completed, or nearly completed, decorated letters by day's end.
Traditionally illumination refers to an ornamental initial, pattern, or illustration painted on the vellum or parchment leaves of a hand-written manuscript as an adornment of the text. This miniature art form flourished especially in books of the Middle Ages. Illumination is also a vibrant art form today, as many of us have seen in exhibits and publications of the St. John's Bible.
PARTICIPANTS NEED TO BRING:
Tracing paper,
masking tape;
Arches 90#HP or 140#HP paper (about 4 sheets approx. 11” x 11”);
include one piece of fine black or dark paper if you like;
your fine point brushes, medium length of hair (not too short);
several inexpensive mixing brushes;
F and B pencils;
T-square;
ruling pen;
water containers;
eraser;
palette;
rags;
gouache or watercolors,
sandpaper pad,
#11 exacto knife or similar;
eye dropper;
OPTIONAL is an adjustable triangle at least 9 inches long.

The workshop will be held in the Community Room of the Bridgewater Condo. The room is a large with floor to ceiling windows. The building is directly across from the Open Book on Washington Ave. Entrance to the building is at 215 10th Ave S, around the corner from the Open Book. Parking is metered and is $1.00 per hour.
Lunch break will be 45 minutes. Bring a lunch or go to one of the many restaurants within a 2 block area. There is a wonderful grocery store in the Bridgewater with a salad bar and great sandwiches.

The workshop will be limited to the first 15 to register. Others will be put on a wait list.
Registration is non-refundable. If the workshop is cancelled entire fee will be returned.
