Paper Marbling - GRC at MCBA

The art of paper marbling has been likened to “capturing a galaxy on a page”.  We’ve all admired those beautiful swirling patterns in an infinite variety of colors and styles, but have you wondered just how it is done?

On Sunday, November 9, GRC members will gather at the Minnesota Center for Book Arts in downtown Minneapolis for a demonstration and tour.  Lin Lacy, MCBA instructor and a botanical artist herself, will demonstrate  three patterns of traditional Ebru marbling - stones, gel git and non pariel - along with the history of the craft.   While we will not each  be marbling our own papers, there will be ample opportunity for participation in the demonstration, and samples will be available to bring home at the end of the presentation.

In Lin’s own artwork, she uses a less traditional style of marbling which she will also demonstrate. She will share examples from her portfolio, showing how marbled papers can add depth and complexity to any artistic expression, including botanical work.

While the demonstration samples are drying, Lin will lead a tour of MCBA’s space including the bindery where books are made, the paper studios and print studios, the gallery space and the shop.  Some of the building’s unique architectural details will be highlighted.  Information will be available on all the classes offered, which range from a half day to a full weekend.

Be sure to register early.  This promises to be an exciting event.
